Money Saving Organization Tips

Messy Closet needs organization

Organization is a very good way to keep your house in order so I want to let you in on a few of my, “Money Saving Organization Tips.”

I have found that when I have things organized it is so much easier to keep my house clean and sure takes less time to clean the house on a regular basis.  I have a relative that whenever I went to her house I always wondered how come her house was always clean and my house was always a mess!  One day when I was her watching her kids I opened a closet to find something and “Oh My, I nearly was attacked by all the things that came tumbling out of that closet,” I found her secret cleanliness!!!

But now on the serious side the, “Money Saving Organization Tips.”

  • A cleaning/organizing system.
  • Low cost ways to organize.

I once read a book about keeping a file box of a cleaning system and setting up a schedule of daily, weekly, monthly and/or yearly cleaning.  That book was, Sidetracked Home Executives, I have to tell you this book is full of humor along with a great system to not only clean your home and keep it clean but to also have a system to help you complete other task throughout the year.  I really think you would enjoy this book, one of the statements on the front of the book is, “From Pigpen to Paradise,” that statement alone says so much about how it can help one to get organized.  Make sure to click on the link at the bottom of this post and order the book for yourself.

Then there is the few organization tips I found that help me stay organized and my cleaning supplies easily accessible.  I really despise when I can’t find something and I know that having a good organization is a marvelous way of helping me not to be frustrated when trying to find something.  Makes me think of when my mother-in-law would come to visit years ago, she has since passed away, but she would say to me, “you seem to always be looking for something.” Having things really organized sure does makes life so much more relaxed. So one thing I did was put my loose photos in a file system in picture boxes, then when I wanted a picture of my children all I had to do was go to that divider and look through the photos.  Of course now with all the digital photo systems people don’t have all the loose photos like us older people but yet it is a system that really works for me.

Then I hated having to get on my knees to find all my cleaning supplies under the sink.  It seemed like it was so hard to find anything under the sink because it is always so dark under there and you had to move so many other cleaning supplies to find one item.  So I found this great organization idea on pinterest, DIY Cleaning Closet, not only did I use the over the door hanging cleaning supplies system, I also did the paper towelling storage, I love this system.  The best part about the organization/storage I use, they are cheap shoe storage systems. When my husband ask me, “do we have any window cleaner?” I can just right to the closet door and grab the window cleaner without have to crawl under the sink.

Oh believe me I don’t have all the cleaning and organization under control but it sure does help to have some areas in a good order.

Little Box of Love

Little Box of Love

Little Box of Love

Little Box of Love

This Valentines I made my husband a little picture box, I call it the, “Little Box of Love.”  I called it that because it contains pictures from when we first met until recently, it is like our little love story in just a matter of 12 pictures.

Little Box of Love

Photos of us from the beginning to now.

My husband was sharing with our church congregation about how much the “Little Box of Love” meant to him, he didn’t think I knew but I was well aware of how much he appreciated it, because it was more then just a bunch of pictures, it has so much more meaning.

Sometimes in our life we don’t realize the impact of what others do with their life, how they go through the rough times or how they continue the race.  God’s word says, Hebrews 12:1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

This little box of pictures is a lifetime, it represents a life before salvation and a life of living for Christ.  As I sat and listened to my husband share about the meaning of the Little Box of Love, I thought what if neither one of us would have accept Christ as our Saviour, what if we wouldn’t have II Timothy 4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:  what if we wouldn’t have done what God wanted?  There were many struggles through our almost 46 years of marriage, it begin in a sinful life style and has come to a life that has been faithfully serving the Lord.

The most beautiful aspect of this Little Box of Love is the love and surrender to God, without our complete surrender to obedience to God there would not be a marriage that has lasted as long as it has.

Marriage is hard work, it takes much sacrifice and surrender to God but the rewards are many.

  • Luke 10:27-“And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.”
  • Ephesians 5:22 -“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.”
  • Ephesians 5:25 – Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
  • Psalm 127:1-(A Song of degrees for Solomon.) Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
  • Proverbs 12;4-A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

Hebrews 12:1 – Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Grand Canyon

I love to travel and visit places I haven’t been before, if I had a “Bucket List” it would be full of places I would love to visit.  Visiting the Grand Canyon was one of those places that was just so exciting to see.

When we were Visiting the Grand Canyon all I could think of was what wonderful handiwork of God!

Our trip started out the ride up to Williams, Arizona from Prescott, Arizona.  I really enjoyed all the sites on the way and took many pictures.  Of course if you read my previous post, http://grammescountrysplendor.com/grand-canyon-great-train-robbery/  the Grand Canyon Railways  https://www.thetrain.com/ you will know that we had a great journey up to the Grand Canyon.

When we reached the Grand Canyon we were treated to a buffet meal https://www.thetrain.com/food/grand-depot-cafe/ in the Grand Canyon Lodge, a wonderful lunch before loading up on the bus and going up to the God’s beauty of the canyons. There is so much more to do besides enjoying the spectacular sites, one can enjoy the adventures of boating, hiking and camping, https://grandcanyon.com/

Trails for Horse Back Riding

As we were standing at the viewing points of the Grand Canyon you could see a group of riders on horses riding down the trail of Grand Canyon, didn’t look like a ride I wanted to try, the trail looked steep to me but then I am not the bravest person and I am sure it was a great adventure.

My husband was a little nervous for me while we were up there at the canyon, it was windy out and I was being quite the daring one and getting kind of close to the edge of the canyon walls, I just was so amazed with the handiwork of God that I wanted to get all the pictures I could.  It was hazy out that day so the pictures aren’t the best and I didn’t have the greatest camera at the time.  I sure hope you enjoy my, “Visiting The Grand Canyon.”

Patriotic Rolled Flowers Shadow Box

I am having so much fun with my Cricut, I just wanted to share my latest project, the “Patriotic Rolled Flowers Shadow Box.”

The rolled flowers really aren’t very hard to make, they actually are kind of fun! So follow along and see how this “Patriotic Rolled Flowers Shadow Box,” was put together.

The supplies you will need to make this shadow box is:

  • Shadow Box, size of your choice.
  • Cardstock, red, white and blue.
  • Glue, I used Tacky Glue.
  • Quilling Tool.
  • Light Grip Mat.

Pattern for 3D Rose Flower

So obviously you do need the Cricut and with it you go to the designs category and pick out the 3D flower pattern, I used the pattern with the rounded scalloped edges, I cut out 4 blue, 8 red and 8 white.

Now it is on to learning how to roll the roses, this is where the quilling tool comes in to play.  After cutting out your flower pattern you take the quilling tool and if you want you can turn the edges of the flower form down as in the pictures, next step is to wind up the flower form into a rose.  There are videos that show how to do these flowers much better then I can begin to explain, Paper Flower Tutorial.

After having rolled and glued all my flowers I placed them onto the back drop paper and glued them into place.

I also decided I wanted to put a patriotic saying on the glass of the shadow box and so I chose words from the song, “You’re A Grand Old Flag.”  So there you have it my “Patriotic Rolled Flowers Shadow Box.”

If you have been following me on my blog you should know by now that I like to save money and “Money Saving Laundry Soap” is one of the ways that I save all year through.

Money Saving Laundry Soap

Laundry Soap Recipes

I have tried a few different DIY laundry soaps and I can’t say that I have been disappointed in any of them, some of them take a little more work & time to make but I have found they all clean my laundry well.

Today I am going to share with you the 3 laundry soaps that I have personally made and used, hopefully you will find one that works for you and saves you money as it does me.

Most the time there are 4 main ingredients and they are:

  • Washing Soda
  • Fels-Naphta Soap/Grated Soap
  • Borax
  • Water
  1. Smelling Amazing Laundry Soap. There are recipes that include using essential oils for scents and also some will use Dawn Dish Detergent or Oxi-Clean, there are many varieties of “Money Saving Laundry Soap.”Smell Amazing Laundry Soap. This is an easy quick laundry detergent, I have used this one often and am always satisfied with the cleaning outcome.  It is just a matter of grating the fels-naphta soad, pouring boiling water over it, stirring it until all the grated soap is dissolved.  Add in the washing soda and borax, pour into a jug or 2 depending on how much you are making, I usually make 2 milk jugs full at a time.  Smell Amazing Laundry Soap.
  2. Creamy Mom’s Super Laundry Sauce.  I really like this one, I like the creamy texture, it takes a little more effort to make and it makes 2 quart jars.  As with the previous recipeI made a double batch, I don’t like to have to make the laundry soap too often.  Once I was done making it I emptied it into a square plastic container with a lid, made it easier to get at over the jars. Mom’s Super Laundry Sauce.
  3. Family Sized Liquid Laundry Soap. This makes a 5 gallon bucket of soap, good for a family, in our house it is just me and my husband and of course the dog, so making a smaller quantity is good for me, but if you have a family you might want to try this recipe for a larger amount.  I have used it but like I said I don’t need that large quantity at a time.   Liquid Laundry Soap-Family Sized Batch.

DIY Glitter Heart Candle Holders

I needed some new Valentine decorations to use for the John 3:16 Meal we were having at church, so I thought I would try my hand at making these being I had all I need to make my “DIY Glitter HeartCandle Holders.”

There are a few steps to prepare these jars for this sweet candle holder, but before I delve into steps I just want to say you can use mason jars for this project, but I had these jars and figured I would put them to good use.

  • Wash the jars good with warm soapy water.
  • If you have any glue residue on them clean that off too.
  • You will need a few items: tape, craft paint, modge podge, glitter and foam brush.

Cleaned jars

Now that you have everything gathered together you are ready to start the, “DIY Glitter Heart Candle Holders.”  So after you have the jars washed up, dried off and any glue residue removed, which by the way I removed my glue residue with Goo Be Gone, works really well.  You will need to secure a heart shape on the outside of the jar, you want it really secure so that no craft paint, or glitter get into the heart shaped space.

I made my heart by tracing a heart from my nifty heart template and then put painters tape over the heart and cut it out, pulled the heart shaped tape from off of the paper heart and secured it onto the jar.

Now we are ready to put the craft paint onto the jar, pour some craft paint into a shallow container and dip your foam brush in it, then paint your jar all around the jar, let the paint dry and then we are ready to brush the modge podge onto the jar. You can pull the tape heart off and carefully brush modge podge on around the heart, sprinkle with glitter and let it dry again for a few hours.

Craft paint and Glitter.

Once it has dried, before giving it that second coat gently tap the jar on a hard service to get any excess glitter off. It is time for another coat of modge podge and glitter, let it dry again, I let mine dry overnight and then I coated it one more time with modge podge to seal it up good.

Sweet Valentine Picture Bouquet

Sweet Valentine Picture Bouquet

I wanted to make some Valentine decorations and so I decided to find some ideas online and I saw this neat bouquet made with cut out daisy forms so I thought what would be sweeter then hearts with pictures and here we have my “Sweet Picture Valentine Bouquet.”

Sweet Valentine Picture Bouquet

Heart Flower Design

I started out by finding a pattern on my Cricut Design Space and there I found this heart flower design, I picked out a few different colors and prints I wanted to use for my “Sweet Picture Valentine Bouquet.”  I placed them on the design cutting board and proceeded as Cricut instructed.  The completed size was 3.05″ By 4.03″.  Once all my pieces were cut out I continued onto assembling the heart, flower and picture cut out into a heart shape. Fortunately I have a heart-shaped tracing template with multiple size hearts, so I traced the smallest heart over the picture and cut the heart out.

Sweet Valentine Picture Bouquet.

Heart, Flowers & Pictures

Heart Design Ready for Sticks

My next step was to attach them onto a dowel, I painted the 1/4″ dowels white and then cut them into different lengths.  How was I going to attach my heart/flower cutout onto the dowel the the next question, of course Hot Glue them.

Sweet Valentine Picture Bouquet

Hot glue onto the back of the flower.

Additional hot glue over to stick to secure it.

Sweet Valentine Picture Bouquet

Flower, Heart & Picture attached to dowel

So there you have it, my “Sweet Valentine Picture Bouquet”  with “Grandpa & Grandma’s Sweethearts wrote on the heart.  I tried to make the saying in vinyl letters but I am having issues with getting my Cricut to cut out very small words, that is definitely a work in progress, much learning to do here.  But I love my Cricut and I can see many more projects in the future.

You know that neat crinkly paper you see in craft stores?  Well, I didn’t have any of that to put in my container for my “Sweet Valentine Picture Bouquet” so I decided to make my own.  I took red, white, pink and paper ran it through the shredder and then I ran it through my Fiskar Paper Crimper and there I had it my Crinkle Paper and it didn’t cost me a penny.

First Cricut Projects

Well, I have actually dived into making crafts on my Cricut!!  At first I was a little overwhelmed with how to use this new machine, but now I am just so excited about all the possibilities.  I am not quite ready to give anyone a training on using the Cricut, but I do want to share my First Cricut Projects!

So many questions when getting ready to use the Cricut, where do you get the vinyl, what kind of vinyl do you use, how do you design on the design center, all those answers are surely being answered.  I am so thankful for the help from my daughter she is sending me sites to check out and places to buy vinyl and where to get SVG downloads.

Rose made with the Cricut

I saw this rose on a post that someone put online and I thought that is just so cute, so I went on youtube and found the pattern for making it.  I went to the design center on Cricut.com and follow the directions and cut those rose out of card stock paper.  I am going to have to make a bunch more of these.

First Cricut Projects

Plate with Faith, Hope and Love Decal

Then my next project was the plate with the decal I uploaded onto the Design Center and found the hearts on the Design Center, so obviously I printed them off and placed them on the plate.  The plate is special to me it came from my mother’s collection of dishes and she passed away Sept. 10, 2001, so I thought this would be a special way to use the plate. I am trying to decorate my house for Valentines but I seem to keep getting side tracked by Cricut projects, at least today I manged to get the Christmas Season items are packed away.

Let your light so shine decal

Last but not least I wanted to make up some decorations for our church dinner we are having.  Each year around Valentines we have a John 3:16 meal, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  For this meal we invite friends and family in to join us for a special menu and I of course want the church decorated for Valentines, well really for the subject of “God’s Love.”  I will be using my Cricut to make some other decorations, so watch for the future post of the other projects I made for the church.

I hope you enjoyed this post and come back soon!  If you love to do crafts and have always wanted those wonderful home decor objects with the sweet sayings on them this is a great way to make them for yourself.  I have a t-shirt I want to make, I am a little weary of that project but I will dive into that one too.

Teaching Our Children To Be Good

The Help Me Be Good Series by Joy Berry

I have always loved reading to my children and grandchildren and I hope they have loved it also.  These days I find it hard to get books that teach our children good things, so many are trying to meet the all the opinions in the world, I totally believe in teaching our children the fundamentals I learned as a child and that means “Teaching Our Children To Be Good.”

I had seen this set of books at a second hand store and I really wanted them, but then I seen they were reserved for someone else. I decided to look for the books online and found that they were a very expensive set. I was fortunate enough a couple of years ago to find 12 of the books at a garage sale for $.50 each.

There is a total of 29 books in the set, each book in the set deals with training a child what a misbehavior is and how to learn to not be that way.  For example there is a book, A Children’s Book About BEING MEAN, here is an excerpt from this book, “This is Robbie and Katie. Reading about Robbie and Katie can help you understand why people are sometimes mean.  It can also help you avoid being mean to others.”

Teaching Our Children To Be Good

Cartoon page out of Being Messy

This set of books is geared for ages 5 to 7, they have pictures in cartoon form for the child to be more attracted to the story and helps them to understand better. The cartoons always have a little rabbit in the background that leaves a comment once in a while. What better way to “Teach Our Children To Be Good” through reading to them, quality time and through the visual example.

My 5 year old granddaughter loved me reading these books to her, I was always surprised when she would pick those books out of my kids library over some book about princesses or dogs.

Some of the other book titles in the set are, Being A Bad Sport, Being Messy, Lying, Being Selfish or Tattling for just a few.  You can find additional sets of books on the author’s Joy Berry’s site: http://joyberrybooks.com/en/ages-5-7  There are other age book sets and much more additional information.  I recommend these books for any parent that is dealing with a behavior issue with a child, easy understanding for the child. You can get a used set through Amazon, click on the image on the image of the Help Me Be Good on the sidebar and it will take you to the page on Amazon.
