Money Saving Organization Tips

Messy Closet needs organization

Organization is a very good way to keep your house in order so I want to let you in on a few of my, “Money Saving Organization Tips.”

I have found that when I have things organized it is so much easier to keep my house clean and sure takes less time to clean the house on a regular basis.  I have a relative that whenever I went to her house I always wondered how come her house was always clean and my house was always a mess!  One day when I was her watching her kids I opened a closet to find something and “Oh My, I nearly was attacked by all the things that came tumbling out of that closet,” I found her secret cleanliness!!!

But now on the serious side the, “Money Saving Organization Tips.”

  • A cleaning/organizing system.
  • Low cost ways to organize.

I once read a book about keeping a file box of a cleaning system and setting up a schedule of daily, weekly, monthly and/or yearly cleaning.  That book was, Sidetracked Home Executives, I have to tell you this book is full of humor along with a great system to not only clean your home and keep it clean but to also have a system to help you complete other task throughout the year.  I really think you would enjoy this book, one of the statements on the front of the book is, “From Pigpen to Paradise,” that statement alone says so much about how it can help one to get organized.  Make sure to click on the link at the bottom of this post and order the book for yourself.

Then there is the few organization tips I found that help me stay organized and my cleaning supplies easily accessible.  I really despise when I can’t find something and I know that having a good organization is a marvelous way of helping me not to be frustrated when trying to find something.  Makes me think of when my mother-in-law would come to visit years ago, she has since passed away, but she would say to me, “you seem to always be looking for something.” Having things really organized sure does makes life so much more relaxed. So one thing I did was put my loose photos in a file system in picture boxes, then when I wanted a picture of my children all I had to do was go to that divider and look through the photos.  Of course now with all the digital photo systems people don’t have all the loose photos like us older people but yet it is a system that really works for me.

Then I hated having to get on my knees to find all my cleaning supplies under the sink.  It seemed like it was so hard to find anything under the sink because it is always so dark under there and you had to move so many other cleaning supplies to find one item.  So I found this great organization idea on pinterest, DIY Cleaning Closet, not only did I use the over the door hanging cleaning supplies system, I also did the paper towelling storage, I love this system.  The best part about the organization/storage I use, they are cheap shoe storage systems. When my husband ask me, “do we have any window cleaner?” I can just right to the closet door and grab the window cleaner without have to crawl under the sink.

Laundry Soap Recipes

I have tried a few different DIY laundry soaps and I can’t say that I have been disappointed in any of them, some of them take a little more work & time to make but I have found they all clean my laundry well.

Today I am going to share with you the 3 laundry soaps that I have personally made and used, hopefully you will find one that works for you and saves you money as it does me.

Most the time there are 4 main ingredients and they are:

  • Washing Soda
  • Fels-Naphta Soap/Grated Soap
  • Borax
  • Water
  1. Smelling Amazing Laundry Soap. There are recipes that include using essential oils for scents and also some will use Dawn Dish Detergent or Oxi-Clean, there are many varieties of “Money Saving Laundry Soap.”Smell Amazing Laundry Soap. This is an easy quick laundry detergent, I have used this one often and am always satisfied with the cleaning outcome.  It is just a matter of grating the fels-naphta soad, pouring boiling water over it, stirring it until all the grated soap is dissolved.  Add in the washing soda and borax, pour into a jug or 2 depending on how much you are making, I usually make 2 milk jugs full at a time.  Smell Amazing Laundry Soap.
  2. Creamy Mom’s Super Laundry Sauce.  I really like this one, I like the creamy texture, it takes a little more effort to make and it makes 2 quart jars.  As with the previous recipeI made a double batch, I don’t like to have to make the laundry soap too often.  Once I was done making it I emptied it into a square plastic container with a lid, made it easier to get at over the jars. Mom’s Super Laundry Sauce.
  3. Family Sized Liquid Laundry Soap. This makes a 5 gallon bucket of soap, good for a family, in our house it is just me and my husband and of course the dog, so making a smaller quantity is good for me, but if you have a family you might want to try this recipe for a larger amount.  I have used it but like I said I don’t need that large quantity at a time.   Liquid Laundry Soap-Family Sized Batch.

DIY Cleaning Made Easy

Cleaning with homemade cleaners

Do you like cleaning as much as I do?  Honestly I like have a very clean house, I try to keep my house clean on a regular basis but, I seem to struggle with it.  One thing that I think makes it easier for me is having all the cleaning products on hand.  That is why I am going to share some of my favorite, “DIY Cleaning Made Easy.”

One of the greatest things that I have discovered is the household products that you have in your home already.  The usefulness of products like Peroxide, Vinegar, and Baking Soda for cleaning your home, even washing your clothing.

  • Some facts about what a miraculous cleaning hydrogen peroxide is, it is safe, readily available, it’s cheap and it for sure Works!!!
  • Vinegar has some very positive cleaning attributes, it cleans almost as well as most all-purpose household cleaners.
  • Mixing a solution of equal parts water and vinegar is a great cleaning product throughout your home. Vinegar is a great disinfectant and deordorizer.
  • Cleaning with baking soda is so amazing, it is one of the most versatile cleaners, it can be used to scrub surfaces just like the commercial abrasive cleaners that cost a whole lot more then a small box or even a large box of baking soda. Baking Soda also is a great deodorizer.
  • Lemon juice is a wonderful natural cleaning product for the home.  It is great on dissolving scum and hard water deposits and for shinning up brass and copper. Mixing lemon juice with vinegar or baking soda to make a cleaning paste.  I actually use the lemon juice with vinegar and baking soda to shine up my stainless steel kitchen sink.

These 4 household products I mentioned have so many more uses then I have mentioned, I want to share a few of the cleaning mixes I use on a regular basis, they will make your house sparkle and with such a small cost, who doesn’t like to save money?  So let’s take a look at my “DIY Cleaning Made Easy” solutions.

Kitchen Floor Cleaner

Using Hydrogen Peroxide for cleaning my linoleum floors, they get to looking a little dingy and at the same time really cleans the ground in dirt off of my linoleum.

  •  Combine half a cup of hydrogen peroxide with one gallon of hot water, then go to town on your flooring. I sometimes add essential oils, lemon or citrus to give me a good smelling scent in my kitchen.

Lemon Scented Dusting Spray

I have always bought my dusting spray, most of the time Pledge, but I found I was having to dust almost everyday and so I thought I would try my own dusting spray, after searching online I found this mixture and I can tell you that I am very very pleased with it, it doesn’t attract dust like it seemed the other commercial products were doing.  So get yourself a plastic spray bottle and mix up your own dusting spray.

  • 1 Cup of distilled water
  • 1/4 Cup vinegar
  • 2 tsp. of olive oil (shines & protects wood)
  • 10-15 drops of Lemon essential oil

Drain Cleaner

One of my other favorites, we have a 4 year old Labrador who my husband bathes in the our tube, I am sure there is a lot of dog hair that manages to make it’s way down the drain and clogs it.  I use this solution once every couple of months and really clears up that sluggish drain.

  • 1 Cup baking soda
  • 1 Cup vinegar
  • 4 Cups Boiling Water
  • Make sure there is no water in the tub or sink, pull out any drain plugs or stoppers, or those little tub strainers with the holes in them.
  • Pour the boiling water down the drain, pour the soda down the drain and once that is all in pour the vinegar in the drain, it will foam up but that is good, cover the drain and let it sit for 30 minutes or longer if you like.

Last year we put in vinyl plank flooring in our Dining Room, could not deal with carpet in the Dining Room any longer!  The cleaning products that the company suggested to use on their flooring was extremely high priced, so once again I found my own, “DIY Cleaning Made Easy” solution.

Vinyl Floor Cleaner

  • 3 tsps of dish soap
  • Hot water
  • A squirt of alcohol
  • Squirt dish soap into bucket with hot water and squirt a little alcohol into the bucket and mop away.  One thing with vinyl flooring is you want to mop going the lengthwise direction of the planks. If you need a little deeper cleaning, add 1 cup of vinegar to the bucket.
