Visiting The Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon

I love to travel and visit places I haven’t been before, if I had a “Bucket List” it would be full of places I would love to visit.  Visiting the Grand Canyon was one of those places that was just so exciting to see.

When we were Visiting the Grand Canyon all I could think of was what wonderful handiwork of God!

Our trip started out the ride up to Williams, Arizona from Prescott, Arizona.  I really enjoyed all the sites on the way and took many pictures.  Of course if you read my previous post, http://grammescountrysplendor.com/grand-canyon-great-train-robbery/  the Grand Canyon Railways  https://www.thetrain.com/ you will know that we had a great journey up to the Grand Canyon.

When we reached the Grand Canyon we were treated to a buffet meal https://www.thetrain.com/food/grand-depot-cafe/ in the Grand Canyon Lodge, a wonderful lunch before loading up on the bus and going up to the God’s beauty of the canyons. There is so much more to do besides enjoying the spectacular sites, one can enjoy the adventures of boating, hiking and camping, https://grandcanyon.com/

Trails for Horse Back Riding

As we were standing at the viewing points of the Grand Canyon you could see a group of riders on horses riding down the trail of Grand Canyon, didn’t look like a ride I wanted to try, the trail looked steep to me but then I am not the bravest person and I am sure it was a great adventure.

My husband was a little nervous for me while we were up there at the canyon, it was windy out and I was being quite the daring one and getting kind of close to the edge of the canyon walls, I just was so amazed with the handiwork of God that I wanted to get all the pictures I could.  It was hazy out that day so the pictures aren’t the best and I didn’t have the greatest camera at the time.  I sure hope you enjoy my, “Visiting The Grand Canyon.”

Have you ever had a train ride?  I had the experience of taking the Amtrak to Michigan and back a few years ago, but nothing like the fun ride on the “Grand Canyon Great Train Robbery” experience.

If you do ever go to Arizona, don’t miss out on going up to the Grand Canyon via “The Grand Canyon Railway,”  it starts in Williams, Arizona and goes up to the south end of the canyons.  Which also Williams is where the Route 66 goes through, check out my earlier post of “Route 66 Road Trip.” The train travels north to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park.  It is a 2 hour and 15 minute ride each way.  All Aboard!! on the train and experience the “Grand Canyon Great Train Robbery.”

But Wait!! Before departing Williams on the train you can’t miss out on the gunfight at Williams Old West Town.  a real fun time of old-time western entertainment and the fun doesn’t end there it carries on to the train with the cowboy singers and musicians strolling car to car.

Wonderful Experience In Sedona, Arizona

Rock Formation in Sedona, Arizona

Have you ever went to a place for the first time and didn’t have enough time to take it all in?  Have you ever wanted to go to Arizona? Well, I have and Sedona, Arizona is one of those places!  let me take you on a bit of a “Wonderful Experience In Sedona, Arizona.”

We went to Sedona back in 2007 when our friends Jim & Betty treated us to a trip to visit them in Prescott, Arizona.  They showed us an experience of a life time which is a story for another day so you will have to return for “The Rest of the Story.”

Let’s get back to our wonderful experience in Sedona, Arizona.  As we drove into Sedona we had to pull over because there was a little lizard – hanging out in the back window!  Jim grabbed him by the tail and his tail came off!!  I took advantage of the moment and captured a few snapshots.

The beautiful Red Rocks that are one of Sedona’s trademarks and then of course Arizona has these cactus everywhere.  Ray is 6′ tall so you can see how huge this Agave Americana Cactus is.

Sedona is a prime visitor destination, it offers so much when it comes to a wonderful experience.  It is a great place for a romantic getaway or even a place to retire to. The adventures are endless, hundreds of trails for hiking and mountain biking.  A photographers paradise with the magnificent red rock country showing off it’s crimson spires and the blaze orange cliffs during a gorgeous romantic sunset. Sedona offers so much adventure and for all ages, from a hot-air balloon ride, white water rafting to a family time at “Slide Rock State Park.” https://azstateparks.com/slide-rock/

Tlaquepaque Shopping Center

I can’t end here and not share my favorite part of Sedona without introducing you to “Tlaquepaque,” just pronouncing it was an adventure!  You ask what is Tlaquepaque (tlakeˈpake)?

It is a shopping center in downtown Sedona, with unique stores.  I am sure it has grown with many more stores since I was there almost 10 years ago!!  All the more reason for me to make another visit there.  Tlaquepaque is more than just a shopping experience, it is so hard to describe the grandeur of this place.

Along with many art galleries you will find American Western Sculptures, wild life bronzes and breathtaking blown glass creations displayed throughout the grounds. These are actual pictures from my gallery of photos I took while there at Sedona.

So many shops to discover, the large array of items available, persian rugs, Native American jewelry, fun to wear clothing, enjoy browsing, tasting and dining.  Plus Tlaquepaque comes alive with it’s Annual Lighting of 6,000 Luminarias, a cherished tradition.  Lighting throughout the courtyards and walkways, sharing the exquisite display with carolers, choirs and musicians.

Oh how I would love to take another trip back to Sedona, who knows maybe I will, my husband is always threatening to move to Arizona to get out of the cold.

Route 66 Road Trip

Route 66 Road Trip

Route 66 Road Trip

Route 66, Williams, AZ

Sitting here watching American Pickers and Mike and Danelle are on a Route 66 Road Trip.  As I was watching the show made me want to go on such a road trip, wouldn’t it be fun?

I always have liked to take road trips!  My 2 oldest granddaughters and I have taken a couple of road trips.  Doing special things with your grandchildren will leave an everlasting memory for them, plus really builds a bond.  One of these days I will post one of the road trips that my granddaughters and I took in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

So let’s check out the  Route 66 Road Trip.  What I found online is that you can start in Chicago and go to California or vice versa.  As I am looking through the route it strikes me that I actually have been on Route 66 when we visited Arizona.  The Route 66 photo above was one I actually took in Williams, AZ., I was so excited to see I actually have pictures of our travels on our mini Route 66 Road Trip.

There is a lot of history with the Route 66 Road Trip, here is a link to give you the history of Route 66:  http://national66.org/history-of-route-66/  so very interesting, a great look at our great America.

So let’s take a look at some of the sties you would see on Route 66.  As we start in Chicago there are a few different sites connected to our travels and one is Lou Mitchell’s Restaurant  https://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/route66/lou_mitchells_chicago.html

And as we travel on from Chicago we will stop at Belvidere Café, Motel, and Gas Station, Litchfield, Illinois.  Then we will head to near Saint Louis, MO and there we find, Red Cedar Inn, Pacific, Missouri.  As we travel along we will now leave Missouri and head into Oklahoma and Texas, Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park, Foyil, Oklahoma.  Then as we travel through Texas we will find a number of interesting American sites, Tower Station and U-Drop Inn Café, Shamrock, Texas.
Here at Amarillo, Texas we find U.S. Route 66-Sixth Street Historic District, this place is full of history. We are now going to enter New Mexico, Arizona and California, we are going to find so many wonderful sites, Bowlin’s Old Crater Trading Post, Bluewater, New Mexico. I loved when we visited Arizona, looking at these sites on Route 66 makes me want to go back there, so check out this Painted Desert Inn, Petrified Forest National Park.  And as we get to end of our journey and enter into California, our final stopping spot will be, Rialto Theatre, South Pasadena, CA.  There is so much more to see that I didn’t list here, all I can think what a great vacation and such an educational journey.

Where You Find A Treasure

Back in October when I went to Ashland to visit a dear friend of mine she introduced me to a few special shops, just the kind of place Where You Find A Treasure!

It seems like every small town has at least one special store where you can find a special item, something that you know someone special will really enjoy and the “New England Store,” had so many special items to pick from.  That was in the fall, I can’t imagine what they offer now for the Christmas Season, I am sure they have many wonderful special gifts available.

As you are preparing for Christmas whether it be a gift or decorating your home it takes a lot of time and effort, but why not stop into The New England Store in Ashland, WI and while you are there visit a few of the other shops in town.

When I was there I found that the New England Store offered a children’s section, seasonal items, jewelry and if you are looking for a gift for a special religious ceremony or just a gift for a spiritual encouragement.

The New England Store also offers a selection of homemade mittens to keep those hands warm in the cold weather.  There is just so much to see at this great store.  A store with history, the building has been there since 1888, this store had been a bank at one time and actually has a bank vault in it to this day.

Check the New England Store out on Facebook and you will find their hours and some of the latest items in the store, some great Christmas items, I wish I could make a trip up there to do a little shopping at the New England Store and the other great shops in Ashland, Wisconsin.

When you are in the area of Ashland, Wisconsin take some time to take advantage of these great specialty shoppes, a small town with quaint shoppes.

And as an added treat don’t miss out on the wonderful Ashland Mural Walk.  I have my favorite which is the Railroad Mural because my Uncle Denis is pictured on it.  There are a lot of the murals through the town depicted days gone by and honoring those that had a part in making Ashland a wonderful town.  The eight-block Main Street business district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the background for a fascinating walk through Ashland’s history.

Ashland will always have a special place in my heart as it is where my mother grew up and she had shared a number of different stories of her growing up days. And then I remember as a very young child going to Ashland to spend Christmas at my Grandpa Schramke’s house on McArthur Ave.  And last but least I spent a few weeks each summer at my aunt & uncles house, babysitting or just hanging out.  All very special memories, so make your own special memories of Ashland on the Lake Superior Shores.  In the picture following is me standing by the Railroad Mural, me depicting my uncle who is the 2nd from the right with his had on his hip.

Red Bicycle Gift Shop

This past weekend I made a trip up to Ashland, Wisconsin and I had such a great time. My friend I was visiting brought me to a number of unique shops and one of them was the Red Bicycle Gift Shoppe.  I would encourage you if you are ever up in that area of Wisconsin you experience the Red Bicycle.

You know the saying, “it’s a small world,”?  Well once again that was brought to truth as the co-owner of the Red Bicycle is the wife of a man from mine & my husband’s pass, he actually use to work with my husband.  Seems everywhere I go I run into someone who I have some connection with.

And speaking of connections, as I walked through this shoppe I found so many items that took me back to years gone by, for example in the following picture you will see a ruler that is shaped into a star, made me think of my Dad, it is one of those old folding rulers, such a neat way to use it and display it.

They have display a local photographer’s photos, so many beautiful prints that you could purchase singly and there were a wonderful display of photos mounted in specialty frames.  How so many simple items can be turned into such a work of art just amazes me, I wish I had such a great imagination.

Just so much nostalgia and creativeness in the Red Bicycle Shoppe, I just wanted to buy and buy!!   If you are looking for a special decor item, something to give that one little spot in your house where you just needed that one interesting piece, I am sure you could find it here.  Or if you are looking for an attractive piece of jewelry there are many choices.
