Closet redo to Craft Area

I had gotten a Cricut Explore Air for Christmas from my daughter, I already did scrapbooking and so I needed some room where everything could be so I could work on my crafts without taking up the Dining Room table constantly.  Well, I transformed half of my spare bedroom closet into a “Closet To Craft Area On A Budget.”

I started out with a full closet and emptied it down to a half closet with nothing in it.

As you can see I added the filing cabinet which I was going to fancy up but will wait until Spring when I can spray paint it in the garage, so far this hasn’t cost me anything, the filing cabinet I already had, plus the other piece of furniture is an old kitchen cabinet I spray painted last year.

Now that I have the furniture pieces in there I made a worktop from a piece of plywood and painted it, that didn’t cost me anything, because the wood I already had and the paint was left over from another project.  The next thing I added was a pegboard, which I also found in the garage from some left over wood, just cut it to the size I wanted with a jigsaw, painted it and screwed it up to the wall.  There was already a board on the wall up at the top, but on the bottom of the pegboard I had to add some depth so I added 8 washers to the screw in the back of the pegboard and then screwed it into the wall.

Then it was onto the decorating part of the Closet To Craft Area On A Budget project.  My first attempt at making Vinyl Wall Decals with my new Cricut Explore Air was pretty successful, I surely did learn a few things about designing one, I realized I should have made the letters a little thicker and maybe a little bigger but hey it was my first time. This little saying is very fitting to my craft work, I am a bit messy whether it be scrapbooking or some other DIY.  Of course this project did cost me a little because I had to buy the Vinyl, but even having to buy that it wasn’t that much of an expense.  I bought a 12″ X 36″ roll of vinyl at Hobby Lobby for $7.99 with a 40% off coupon, so making the cost $4.79 and I used only a small portion of that roll.  My next decorative project with the vinyl was the “I Love My Grandkids,” decal I posted on the picture, I should have used a different color, didn’t work out quite like I wanted but I know it is there and what it says!

This project really was a very minimal cost as even the little items like the picture frame I bought at a second hand store for $.25 and the metal basket hanging on the wall was $.50 and the shelf was a garage sale item I had bought a few years back, so I would say my largest expense was the vinyl.  The storage on the shelves was either items I have had around the house or bought a while back, even some of the picture boxes are just shoe boxes that I covered with paper that had family photos printed on it, I made those boxes like 22 years ago and look they are still in one piece and very useful.

This is going to be a very useful area for me and I hope that it gives you some inspiration to make yourself a craft area, maybe you have a spare closet that you just don’t really use that much or even a spare room that could be turned into a craft area.  There are so many possibilities and you can get so many ideas from the Internet.  I had taken a closet in our former home and turned that closet I used for whatever into a great place to organize all my craft items so I wasn’t digging here and there for them.  I actually got the main idea from a post on pinterest, https://www.pinterest.com/pin/179581103861189668/
