Decorative Fabric Pumpkin
I am always looking for new decorative ideas and I saw these Decorative Fabric Pumpkins for sale at a craft store, so I thought I should be able to make them for at least half the price, I am always up for a challenge when it comes to crafts or DIYs. So I hope that you can follow my instructions and make yourself some fabric pumpkins.
- Needle & Thread (heavy thread &/or string)
- Twine or yard
- Sewing Machine
- Felt/Fabric for leaves
- Hot Glue Gun
Fabric size cuts
- 5 X 10
- 8 X 16
- 10 X 20
Instructions: I will be showing examples with both cotton fabric and burlap fabric.
Start by cutting your fabric according to whatever size pumpkin you prefer. Then fold in half with wrong sides out, short sides together, then stitch the raw edges using 1/4″ seam.
Leave wrong sides out and thread needle using heavy thread, sew a running stitch on bottom edge.
Pull thread tight and tie knot, a double knot for security.
Now you have a fabric basket and ready to fill with poly-fil. Sew a running stitch along the top, pull tight & tie.
Note: I use a dab of hot glue on the top and bottom, just for security.
With your twine threaded on a large eyed needle tie a knot and make a stitch at the bottom of the pumpkin, pull tight bring the thread up to the top of pumpkin and stitch through fabric and go down the other side pull somewhat taunt to make a light indent on side of pumpkin, repeat this until you have 4 or 6 sections. Tie off and once again secure with hot glue.
Time to add the stem, add a good amount of hot glue push the stem down and add glue around the stem to secure it. Cut out leaf, using template from Martha Stewart, http://www.marthastewart.com/265303/pumpkin-leaf-and-tendril-how-to You can use either green craft felt or fabric, printed or plain. Also you could use green ribbons.
Now if using burlap as I did for my bigger Decorative Fabric Pumpkin, I used a string to do the running stitch work. Tie a double knot at the end of string or it may pull through. Follow process for the fabric pumpkin.
